Sony unveils its first tablets in bid to compete with Apple's iPad

Sony revealed Tuesday two Google Android-based touchscreen tablets, which will released this fall in an attempt to catch up to Apple's year-long head start with the iPad.

The tablets, dubbed S1 and S2, were unveiled at a media launch in Japan, Reuters reports. Sony will attempt to leverage its successes in the gaming industry to drive sales of the tablets, as both the S1, which sports a 9.4-inch display, and the S2, which features two 5.5-inch displays, will be compatible with select PlayStation games.

Sony deputy president of consumer products and services Kunimasa Suzuki indicated that the devices will run the tablet-designed Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, as he pulled a prototype from a jacket pocket at the launch.

In an effort to distinguish itself from the growing list of Android-based iPad competitors, such as the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab, Sony has developed two unique form factors for its tablets. The S1 has an "off-center of gravity form factor," while the S2 features a foldable dual-screen setup.

The two devices will be marketed under the "Sony Tablet" brand and will feature heavy cross-promotion of Sony's Qriocity media suite.

The S1 will feature a Tegra 2 processor, Wi-Fi and 3G/4G cellular data capability. IT will also include an IR port for AV controls with Sony's line of Bravia televisions and support for the Sony-initiated Digital Living Network Alliance standards. Sony held off on revealing further details on either the S1 or the S2, disclaiming that "design and specifications are subject to change without notice.

The devices are slated for a global release in the fall of this year.

In January, Sony surprised attendees of the Consumer Electronics Show when the company declared its intentions to take the No. 2 spot in the tablet market within a year, despite not having released a tablet.

Earlier this year, Sony unveiled the next-generation version of its PlayStation Portable, dubbed the NGP in hopes of striking back at Apple, whose popular iOS devices have quickly begun cannibalizing Sony's share of the gaming market.

The Japanese electronics giant also took the wraps off a partnership with Google and other Android handset makers that will produce the PlayStation Suite, an Android-compatible content platform that will bring both classic and new PlayStation games to the mobile operating system.

"Users will be able to enjoy PlayStation content on an open operating system for the first time in PlayStation history," the company said in a statement in January. The move is a break from precedent from Sony, which has preferred its own proprietary formats over open ones.

Apple's 'iPhone 6' to employ Sharp's next-gen p-Si LCDs in spring 2012

Apple has reportedly selected Sharp to create next-generation low-temperature poly-silicon LCD displays, which will allow a thinner and lighter design for the anticipated sixth-generation iPhone in 2012.
Sharp will begin manufacturing of the displays in the spring of next year, according to Japanese newspaper Nikkan (via Google Translate). The company is said to have already begun preparing equipment at its Kameyama Plant No. 1, which is primarily used for building LCD TVs.

The liquid crystal display on the anticipated "iPhone 6" is said to feature "low-temperature poly-silicon" technology, a next-generation display format that allows for thinner and lighter screens that consume less power than traditional LCD screens.

In a "p-Si LCD," the thin film transistor, or TFT, of the screen is made of polycristalline silicon. With this method, the display drivers can be mounted directly onto the glass substrate, shrinking the TFT section and allowing for a thinner LCD display.

This technology has allowed companies to create "system on glass" devices, in which the optical sensors, signal processing circuits and other components are located directly on the glass substrate. This negates the need for additional components in a device like an iPhone, saving space within the device and even improving battery life with increased efficiency.

Other advantages of a p-Si display are said to be a higher aperture ratio, which allow for more vivid images onscreen, and enhanced durability, with the amount of connecting pins reduced.

  The rumors of a p-Si LCD would suggest that Apple is not considering organic LED displays, an alternative low-power technology that has been pushed in iPhone-competing devices like the Samsung Galaxy S. Numerous rumors have suggested that Apple has shown interest on OLED, but the iPhone maker has not 
utilized the technology in any of its devices. 

Netgear readies dual-band 750Mbps wireless router

NETWORK KIT MAKER Netgear has released a dual band wireless router claiming up to 750Mbps throughput.
Netgear's N750 wireless router is the firm's top of the range model that operates on both 802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands with 300Mbps and 450Mbps throughput respectively. Netgear says that the router can operate on both bands simultaneously. offering an aggregate throughput of up 750Mbps.
Netgear says that by using the 5GHz frequency band the N750 can provide "smoother, more consistent streaming to newer laptops, video game consoles and other dual-band wireless N [802.11n] devices for a superior user experience", as there is less interference than the 2.4GHz band. Aside from its impressive turn of speed, Netgear also highlights support for parental controls, DLNA server support and a USB port that allows files from connected devices to be streamed over the network.
Som Pal Choudhury, director of product marketing at Netgear said, "No wireless router on the market today is faster or better prepared to deliver these next-generation online experiences to everyone in the family than the N750."
Netgear hasn't announced pricing for its N750 dual band wireless router yet, however over in the US it sells for around $150 (£91), so expect it to be priced at around the £100 mark when it finally tips up in the UK.

Windows 8 webcam application video surfaces

Hot off the heels of the Windows 8 "pattern login" video from yesterday comes this new video from the same source. MyDigitalLife user "PlainDickhead" has posted another YouTube video from a copy of Windows 8 believed to be newer than the leaked M1 build currently circulating on the Internet. The video, which originated from this thread, demonstrates a webcam UI for configuring webcam settings, application settings, and allows users to take timed or instant still shots and short video clips.
The application has a Metro-esque feel to it, with a dark background, spacious UI controls, and large fonts. The settings for the application allow one to specify a webcam, audio source, video resolution, frame rate, and an audio recording level. On another tab, users can let the webcam driver automatically determine picture settings, or they can manually adjust the brightness, focus, exposure, and zoom levels, as well as the flicker refresh rate.
Users may snap a video or still shot by clicking on one of three icons to the right of the application. In either mode, the user is offered to keep or throw away the captured output. For videos, it appears that basic frame cropping functionality is there, in addition to setting a zoom level. However, the video preview does not appear to work correctly in this build. For still shots, users may crop the preview output before saving.

3 Major Issues with the Latest iPhone Tracking “Discovery”

1) Apple is not collecting this data.

And to suggest otherwise is completely misrepresenting Apple. I quote:
Apple is gathering this data, but it’s clearly intentional, as the database is being restored across backups, and even device migrations.
Apple is not harvesting this data from your device. This is data on the device that you as the customer purchased and unless they can show concrete evidence supporting this claim – network traffic analysis of connections to Apple servers – I rebut this claim in full. Through my research in this field and all traffic analysis I have performed, not once have I seen this data traverse a network. As rich of data as this might be, it’s actually illegal under California state law:
(a) No person or entity in this state shall use an electronic tracking device to determine the location or movement of a person.
I don’t think that’s a legal battle Apple wants to face considering the sale of over 100 million iDevices worldwide. That raises the question – how is this data used? It’s used all the time by software running on the phone. Built-In applications such as Maps and Camera use this geolocational data to operate. Apple provides an API for access to location awareness called Core Location. Here is Apple’s description of this softare library:
The Core Location framework lets you determine the current location or heading associated with a device. The framework uses the available hardware to determine the user’s position and heading. You use the classes and protocols in this framework to configure and schedule the delivery of location and heading events. You can also use it to define geographic regions and monitor when the user crosses the boundaries of those regions.
Seems pretty clear. So now the question becomes why did this “hidden” file secretly appear in iOS 4?

2) This hidden file is neither new nor secret.

It’s just moved. Location services have been available to the Apple device for some time. Understand what this file is – a log generated by the various radios and sensors located within the device. This file is utilized by several operations on the device that actually is what makes this device pretty “smart”. This file existed in a different form prior to iOS 4, but not in form it is today.
Currently, consolidated.db lies within the “User Data Partition” on the device. This is a logical filesystem that maintains non-system level privileges and where most of the data is stored. When you perform an iOS Backup through iTunes, it is backing up this partition. Prior to iOS 4, a file called h-cells.plist actually existed in the /root/Library/caches/locationd folder, but with hidden access from other software and applications. h-cells.plist contained much of the same information regarding baseband radio locations as consolidated.db does now, but in Apple Property List format rather than sqlite3. Through my work with various law enforcement agencies, we’ve used h-cells.plist on devices older than iOS 4 to harvest geolocational evidence from iOS devices.
So lets recap.
h-cells.plist = Pre iOS 4 / Radio Logs including Geolocational Data / Hidden from Forensic Extraction (usually)
consolidated.db = iOS 4+ / Radio logs including geolocational Data / Easily acquired through simple forensic techniques
The change comes with a feature introduced in iOS 4 – Mutlitasking and Background Location Services. Apps now have to use Apple’s API to operate in the background – remember, this is not pure unix we’re dealing with – it is only a logical multitasking through Apple’s API. Because of these new APIs and the sandbox design of 3rd party applications, Apple had to move access to this data. Either way, it is not secret, malicious, or hidden. Users still have to approve location access to any application and have the ability to instantly turn off location services to applications inside the Settings menu on their device. That does not stop the generation of these logs, however, it simply prevents applications from utilizing the APIs to access the data.

3) This “discovery” was published months ago.

I understand that Mr. Allan and Mr. Warden are valued researchers for O’Reilly, but they have completely missed the boat on this one. In the spirit of academia, due diligence is a must to determine who else has done such research. Mr. Allan, Mr. Warden, and O’Reilly have overlooked and failed to cite an entire area of research that has already been done on this subject and claimed full authorship of it. Let’s break down my history:
Back in 2010 when the iPad first came out, I did a research project at the Rochester Institute of Technology on Apple forensics. Professor Bill Stackpole of the Networking, Security, & Systems Administration Department was teaching a computer forensics course and pitched the idea of doing forensic analysis on my recently acquired iPad. We purchased a few utilities and began studying the various components of apple mobile devices. We discovered three things:
  • Third Party Application data can contain usernames, passwords, and interpersonal communication data, usually in plain text.
  • Apple configurations and logs contain lots of network and communication related data.
  • Geolocational Artifacts were one of the single most important forensic vectors found on these devices.
After presenting that project to Professor Stackpole’s forensic class, I began work last summer with Sean Morrissey, managing director of Katana Forensics on it’s iOS Forensic Software utility, Lantern. While developing with Sean, I continued to work with Professor Stackpole an academic paper outlining our findings in the Apple Forensic field. This paper was accepted for publication into the Hawaii International Conference for System Sciences 44 and is now an IEEE Publication. I presented on it in January in Hawaii and during my presentation discussed consolidated.db and it’s contents with my audience – my paper was written prior to iOS 4 coming out, but my presentation was updated to include iOS 4 artifacts.
Throughout the summer, I worked extensively with Sean on both developing Lantern and writing custom software to interpret forensic data for customers of ours who needed better ways of searching for and interpreting data.

Obviously this test is nonscientific and there’s nothing too groundbreaking here, but it’s interesting to watch anyway. Sure there are improvements in general speed and functionality, but I think we have yet to really see apps that really take advantage of the improved iPad 2 hardware specs.

Will Apple release this white iPhone with T-Mobile USA 3G support?


I’ve been a happy T-Mobile customer for many years and always said I would buy an iPhone as soon as it came to T-Mobile. According to some photos and information on Boy Genius Report Apple is testing a white iPhone with T-Mobile 3G bands. However, with the AT&T and T-Mobile deal being worked out, this may simply be a test platform since it doesn’t seem to make much sense that Apple releases a T-Mobile USA only 3G version of the iPhone.
If the AT&T/T-Mobile deal goes through, then T-Mobile customers will eventually get the iPhone since they will then be AT&T customers. It would be awesome to see Apple release an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 that is penta-band 3G, like what Nokia has done with its latest Symbian smartphones. No one else has yet released a penta-band 3G device that lets consumers use their GSM device with 3G data around the world without worrying about specific carrier frequencies. Like other things Apple has done (video calling), they could release a penta-band iPhone and say they were the first to do it too .

Gunnar Optiks Phenom 3D

3D glasses typically come in two flavors. If you have an active 3D HDTV, you use expensive and bulky active-shutter glasses that need to be wirelessly synced with the TV to work. If you watch a 3D movie in a theater or on a passive 3D HDTV like the Vizio XVT3D650SV ($3,699.99, 4 stars), you use passive 3D glasses. This type uses filtered lenses instead of LCD shutters to help display the 3D image. Here, the panel does most of the work and the passive glasses are lightweight, cheap, and often disposable. Gunnar Optiks offers a third type of 3D glasses: passive specs built to last. At $99 (list) they're priced more like active-shutter glasses or brand-name sunglasses, but solid build quality and good looks make them a nice alternative to 3D theater glasses. Unfortunately, since they're not dark enough to be sunglasses, their only real purpose is 3D movies, so it's hard to justify dropping $100 on a pair you're not likely to use very often.
For 3D glasses, the Gunnar Phenom pair is very well-made, it looks and feels as good as Oakley or Ray-Ban shades. The sturdy, all-metal frames have hidden-spring hinges that let your temples spread out comfortably. The nose pads are mounted on thick wire arms screwed, resting just right on the bridge of the nose. In tests, with my oversized skull, the Phenom was remarkably comfortable.
The glasses work with any passive 3D display, including select Vizio and LG HDTVs and theaters that show RealD 3D movies. Whether you want to watch a 3D movie at home or in the theater, the Phenom is a much more comfortable option than the cheap, plastic glasses included with passive 3D HDTVs or those you get at the movie theater. Since the glasses use the exact same filters as any other passive 3D glasses, they don't enhance or alter the 3D experience in any way (except for the benefits of the lens geometry, as explained below). The 3D you see through the Gunnars is the same 3D you'll see through the cheap pack-in glasses.
While Gunnar doesn't recommend the Phenom 3D glasses for use as sunglasses, they're still good for partly cloudy days. According to Gunnar, the 3D lenses are tinted to about 50 percent, while typical sunglasses are generally tinted to about 80 percent. This means the lenses aren't quite dark enough for bright days. The 3D lenses are coated with 100 percent UVA and UVB protection, however, so they can still protect your eyes.
I tested the glasses with the LG 47LW6500, a passive 47-inch 3D HDTV. The TV comes with plastic glasses with flimsy cellophane-like lenses. The flat lenses make the glasses especially susceptible to reflections. In comparison, the Phenom felt supremely comfortable, and the curved lenses with anti-glare coating prevented me from catching stray reflections. Though the Phenom's frames are metal and the lenses are solid, at just 0.6 ounces they're similar in weight to the bundled 0.4-ounce LG glasses .
If you have the inclination (and the money to spend), Gunnar's Phenom 3D glasses are a fine technological fashion statement. They look and feel great, and let you watch 3D movies in theaters or anywhere there's a passive 3D TV. Unfortunately, with lenses that aren't quite dark enough to serve as sunglasses, their real value relies upon 3D content. Unless you watch 3D movies regularly, you probably won't often don these $100 shades
