Sony Begins Gradual Restoration of PlayStation Network

After over three weeks of waiting, Sony will begin to restore PlayStation Network services on Saturday.
Certain functions of the online gaming service for PlayStation 3 and PSP will be up and running on May 14, Sony said in a press release. The services that will be revived first are Netflix and Hulu viewing, online multiplayer gameplay and friends list access among others. Notably absent from this list is the PlayStation Store digital content shop, which Sony says will be back up and running by May 31.
Sony said that only some territories — the Americas, Europe, New Zealand, Australia and the Middle East — will see their PlayStation Network services restored on Saturday. Other territories’ start dates will be announced later, Sony said. It plans to have every service running in every territory by the end of May.
The company’s Sony Online Entertainment division, which runs massively multiplayer online games like DC Universe Online, is back up and running, offering a “Welcome Back” package of free in-game items to its customers. Sony said on Saturday that it would announce the details of its “Welcome Back” goodwill gesture for PlayStation 3 and PSP owners soon.
Sony took down the PlayStation Network for an extensive retooling following a security breach in April that led to the exposure of over 100 million user accounts, which may have included credit card data.
