Microsoft is currently hard at work developing Windows Phone 7.5, which aims to bring a range of key upgrades to the Windows Phone world. According to WPCentral, Microsoft recently announced additional details about what the upgrade will offer. Bing, Microsoft's pretty (useless) stepchild, is for instance said to receive turn-by-turn navigation.
Nokia recently stated that several prototypes are running early builds of Windows Phone 7.5, and a leak recently suggested that HTC is planning to offer a Windows Phone powered by a third-generation Snapdragon processor at some point. If the latest official Microsoft statement is to be believed, Windows Phone 7.5 should make its debut on devices in time for the 2011 holiday season.
A recent report from Canalys revealed that approximately 2.5 million Windows Phones were shipped in the first quarter of 2011, up from approximately 2 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. Given the fact that Samsung's new Galaxy S2 powered by TouchWIZ 4 atop Android has received 3 million pre-orders from carriers, it's safe to say that Windows Phones aren't exactly top priority out there.
As such, Windows Phone 7.5 is expected to enable manufacturers and carriers to more easily customize the Windows Phone experience. According to one leak, a seamless interface experience across customizations, Microsoft services and third-party services may be all that will be required. It still remains to be seen what changes will be made to make Windows Phone smartphones budget-friendly while remaining useful.
